Laughter Therapy Is Real—And It’s Now Being Used to Treat Chronic Pain

It might sound silly, but hospitals across the U.S. are now using “laughter therapy” to help patients manage chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. And the science backs it up.

Laughter triggers the release of endorphins—natural feel-good chemicals that reduce pain and boost mood. A study at UCLA showed that patients who watched 30 minutes of comedy daily needed fewer pain meds and had lower stress levels.

“It’s not a cure, but it’s powerful,” said Dr. Elena Fisher. “When we laugh, the body relaxes, and healing begins.”

From cancer wards to rehab centers, laughter is becoming medicine—and patients are smiling through the struggle.
