The Forest Man of India: How Jadav Payeng Single-Handedly Turned a Barren Sandbar into a Lush Wildlife Sanctuary Over Three Decades Jadav Payeng, often referred to as the “Forest Man of India,” embarked on a remarkable journey in 1979 at the age of 16.

Witnessing the death of snakes due to extreme heat and lack of shade on a barren sandbar in the Brahmaputra River, he decided to take action.

Over the next three decades, Jadav single-handedly planted thousands of trees, transforming the barren land into a lush, thriving forest now known as the Molai Forest. His dedication not only restored the ecosystem but also brought back wildlife, including elephants and tigers. Jadav’s story is a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on the environment through persistence and love for nature.
