Award shows can be a shambles. “What’s up, Miley?” nearly always comes up, which I suppose is to be anticipated when you jam dozens of celebs into a big, dark room and feed them alcohol. The 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards included plenty of drama, including a subtle act of shade that you might have missed. Pete Davidson, comedian and former Kim Kardashian rebound, dressed up as Kanye West for the Emmys award ceremony in a gesture that can only be described as “aggressively stirring a cold pot.” If you’re feeling charitable, you could call it a fashionable coincidence, but Twitter is convinced there’s more going on.

Davidson made a surprise appearance at the Emmys on Monday, Sept. 12, to present the award for Best Comedy Series, but it wasn’t his trademark brand of humor that drew the most attention. Instead, it was his clothes that appeared familiar to a few observant admirers. Davidson arrived wearing a Dickies Eisenhower Jacket and matching Dickies slacks. He wore the slate gray outfit with a white undershirt and white sneakers. It’s a traditional, utilitarian design that has been done before, such as when Kanye West wore an identical outfit to the 2019 Met Gala with his then-wife, Kim Kardashian.

West wore the same black Dickies jacket with the same black Dickies slacks and a white shirt underneath to the 2019 Met Gala. Given his comedic proclivities, it’s probable Davidson was attempting to mimic this appearance. Dickies, on the other hand, has a cult-like following that many, many people adore. The Eisenhower Jacket has been one of the brand’s most popular pieces for nearly 70 years, so it wouldn’t be surprising if two trendy celebs wore the same ‘fit. On the other hand, we’re discussing Davidson and West.
Given that Davidson and Kardashian are no longer together, if Davidson was intending to call out West with this look, it’s a little untidy with a dash of desire. Sure, there’s animosity between the SNL veteran and the Donda 2 rapper, but Davidson was rarely the initiator of those public brawls. Davidson’s decision to replicate the rapper’s clothing from three years ago, especially after Kardashian had supposedly moved on from their breakup, appears to be a bold move. I feel like a gauntlet has been thrown down at West’s — or even Kardashian’s? — feet, but I’m not sure what anyone is fighting for at this point, other than, of course, attention.
