I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even wanna go back to America?’:LeBron James

In the weeks after WNBA star Brittney Griner’s extended detention in Russia, many of her supporters have compared her to LeBron James, thinking that the US would have found a way to bring her home. Now, James is speaking up about the situation.

In a preview for a new episode of his HBO show The Shop, James appears to blame the government for what he thinks is a weak response in attempting to free the Phoenix Mercury Center, who has been jailed since February.

“How can she possibly believe that America has her back now?” In the little clip, James says “I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even wanna go back to America?’”

Griner was arrested earlier this year at an airport near Moscow for allegedly importing hashish oil into Russia via vape cartridges. Griner, who faces up to ten years in Russian jail, pled guilty to the charge at a hearing for her trial last week, a decision that some feel may help expedite the process of bringing her home.

Griner’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, said on Twitter in June: “Regardless of the legal proceedings, the negotiation for her immediate release should remain a top priority, and we expect @POTUS and @VP to do all in their power, right now, to get a deal done to bring her home.”

Colas said that her arrest was a political move by Russia, and in May, the US government said that Griner was being “wrongfully held,” which meant that the US would fight hard for her release.

Griner wrote a handwritten letter to President Biden earlier this month, expressing her concern about her imprisonment. “I’m frightened I might stay here forever while I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the safety of my wife, family, friends, Olympic shirt, or any accomplishments,” she wrote.
