Liz Woodward, a waitress, was working the night shift in a New Jersey café that day. At five a.m., firefighters Paul Hallings and Tim Young entered the cafe and promptly requested the largest cup of coffee.
“I knew they were having a bad day as soon as they said it,” Liz says. The soldiers were fatigued, hungry, and thirsty after fighting the fire in the warehouse for hours. Liz brought them a bill at breakfast. She scribbled:
“I’ll pay for your breakfast today.” Thank you for your efforts in assisting others and rushing to where everyone else is fleeing.”
Liz’s actions moved the men so much that they shared the story on Facebook. However, the narrative did not finish there. They discovered Liz’s desire to purchase a wheelchair lift for her father’s wheelchair on her Facebook page.
Tim and Paul created a GoFundMe website and organized a fundraiser. They were able to generate more money for Liz than was required to purchase a hoist. Watch the video to see Liz’s response to the surprise of the fireman.
