The spectators did not anticipate this couple to shine on the rink at such a young age…

Those who enjoyed their youth in the 1960s are unlikely to be as vibrant today. At 83 and 79 years old, respectively, famed skating couple Oleg Alekeyevich Protopopov and Lyudmila Yevgeniyevna Belousova were given the opportunity to demonstrate their youthful powers.

Oleg and Lyudmila met in Moscow in the spring of 1954, and their gold medal journey began there. This would be the start of a deep and lasting relationship between two loves who were both passionate about competitive skating. Lyudmila Belousova began skating when she was 16 years old, but Oleg Protopopov began skating much later, at the age of 15.

As luck would have it, their professional skating relationship and partnership led to their marriage three years after they first met. The two-time Olympic gold medalists would then seek even more difficult technical challenges. Protopopov and Belousova competed in their first World Championships in 1958, finishing 13th after switching coaches and methods. In 1960, the couple competed in their first Olympics, finishing ninth.

Belousova and Protopopov competed with tenacity and effort in the 1962 World Championship, finishing second and collecting a silver medal. Following this, the duo would go on to score a streak of incredible successes. They went on to win the World Championships in 1965 and kept the top rank for the next three years. The now-powerful team won their first Olympic gold medal in 1964, and they gained a second during the 1968 Games.

Unfortunately, the Protopopovs emigrated to Switzerland in 1979 and eventually relocated in America because to political turmoil. The two, who had a lot of experience, decided to join the Ice Capades while still competing professionally in their 60s.

They have made significant contributions to the evolution and revolution of skating. Protopopov and Belousova are well-known for their ability to combine languid, sensual dancing with skating in one move. A powerful 83 and 79-year-old Protopopov and Belousova demonstrated their moves in a 2015 video that continues to amaze many people today. Belousova unfortunately died two years after her spectacular performance in 2017.
