Matthew McConaughey, a prominent figure in the film industry, has achieved great success and received numerous awards for his acting talent. However, his journey to the top has had its fair share of challenges.
The 54-year-old has gained recognition for his exceptional performances in movies like A Time to Kill, Dallas Buyers Club, and Interstellar. His endearing personality and undeniable charm have made him beloved by audiences.
However, it appears that there was a point in time when he contemplated abandoning his acting career. In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, the actor opened up about a time when retirement seemed like a real possibility.
McConaughey said: “I’ve usually zigged when I felt like Hollywood wanted me to zag. When I had my rom-com years, there was only so much bandwidth I could give to those, and those were some solid hits for me.
“But I wanted to try some other stuff. Of course I wasn’t getting it, so I had to leave Hollywood for two years.”
During his two year break, he gained a fresh perspective on life. Surprisingly, the famous actor even contemplated leaving the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to explore a completely new profession.
“Dude, it was scary.» He opened up about having extensive discussions with his wife regarding the need to pursue a different career path. “I think I’m going to teach high school classes. I’m considering pursuing a career as a conductor. I’ve been considering becoming a wildlife guide.»
I truly believed that I had left behind the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. I got out of my lane, the lane Hollywood said I should stay in’, and Hollywood’s like, ‘Well, f**k you, dude. You should have stayed in your lane. Later’.”
He continued, «It was quite frightening. Every day feels never-ending, leaving behind a lingering feeling of insignificance. However, I was determined to stick to my decision and not give up on the mission I had embarked on, so I refused to back out and quit.»
“But it was scary, because I didn’t know if I was ever going to get out of the desert.”
Fortunately, McConaughey has made a remarkable comeback to the silver screen, starring in a series of highly acclaimed and adored films in the past decade.
In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, the actor discussed his journey in the industry and reminisced about how his life seemed to transform overnight following the success of his debut film.
«When I reflect on my experience with A Time to Kill, it takes me back to a time when I had just achieved a significant breakthrough in a major studio film and gained fame. I recall the Thursday before the movie’s release, when there were countless scripts available to me. Surprisingly, out of the hundred scripts, I was only able to secure one, leaving me unable to book the remaining ninety-nine,» he shared.
«In that one weekend, 99 no’s turned into 99 yeses.»
«I was thinking, ‘What? Just three days ago, I would have been willing to do any of these! So now you’re wondering which option I prefer? It was a hell of a shocking thing. I packed my backpack and traveled to Peru for three weeks solely to have some time to reflect.»
