Eric Clapton, Luciano Pavarotti, East London Gospel Choir — Holy Mother (Live)

Back in 1986, Eric Clapton decided to include the lesser-known pop-rock ballad «Holy Mother» on his latest album «August.» The song had a powerful gospel influence and focused on the themes of prayer and salvation. In the next decade, Eric’s incredible live performance of the album track alongside the famous opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti gained a staggering 12.9 million views on YouTube. This was millions more than the original upload and solidified Clapton’s track in the minds of the public.

In the song’s opening section, Eric, who was 51 years old at the time, delivered a solo performance that maintained the original clarity, while the East London Gospel Choir added a gentle touch with their swaying and supporting vocals. Unlike the typical rock ballad, Luciano Pavarotti’s bold operatic vocals, combined with his rich Italian accent, turned the song into an incredibly moving hymn in the second verse.

At the beginning of the song, Luciano’s voice stands out due to its contrasting style and unconventional sound in comparison to Eric’s verse. There was a beautiful sense of unity that arose when Luciano, who was 61 years old at the time, assumed leadership, and Eric Clapton’s mesmerizing guitar solo blended perfectly with the Gospel Choir’s exquisite accompaniment.
