Babies and grass don’t go along like—well, they don’t at all, but it’s still entertaining to watch them attempt to get along in these viral videos.

There are several things that newborns definitely dislike, ranging from too loud voices to having dirty diapers. But it turns out there’s one thing that you might not realize they despise until you’re at a picnic or hanging out in your garden. You’ll attempt to put your child on what appears to be a dry, thick piece of lush grass, and they’ll do all they can to avoid it. Still not convinced? Look no further than a series of popular videos featuring babies that despise grass.

All over social media and YouTube, you’ll see videos of newborns refusing to put their naked legs or feet on the grass. We don’t know when this incredible trend began, but in 2017, a father called Pazi D. On the Urban Dads Facebook group and on YouTube, uploaded this humorous video of his grass-phobic baby girl, Kai. He observed, “My 11-month-old daughter transforms like a gymnast around grass!”

Another 2020 YouTube compilation video featured several children performing the same stunt. To avoid contact with a spiky lawn, babies will do full splits or simply extend their legs straight out.

And this cute collection shows babies hesitating to put their clothed stomachs on the grass or toying with the idea by putting one foot off of a picnic blanket before quickly moving back.
