Bella Hadid had a dress sprayed on her body at a fashion show

That’s how you do a show-stopping moment. On September 30, Bella Hadid finished the Coperni spring/summer 2023 Paris Fashion Week show wearing a one-of-a-kind bodycon dress that was actually designed for her: A crew sprayed—yes, sprayed—on the sleek, white slip dress in the middle of the presentation, right on the runway in front of Kylie Jenner.

But this wasn’t your average hardware store spray paint. Fabrican Spray-on fabric, a canned liquid that solidifies into a wearable textile when sprayed directly onto the wearer’s body, was employed by the French womenswear designers. According to the London-based company’s website, the technology, which has been available for more than two decades, is also used to manufacture everything from medical patches to spray-on hygiene wipes.

Hadid entered the studio in a pair of white pants, covering her chest with one arm, and after a short application, she was runway-ready in an off-the-shoulder asymmetrical white dress with a leg slit. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the Coperni fashion show was devoted to «women of this world,» with designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillan writing in the show notes, «To you, ladies who transcend your body and never drop your eyes beneath the barbed wire of morality.»

Following that, Hadid posted on her Instagram stories that she had «no words» for the time being but thanked everyone for «all of the love.» «There is no one more essential than the next,» she noted, emphasizing that «none of this would be possible without the enthusiasm, hard work, and devotion» of the full Coperni team, which includes Meyer, Vaillan, and stylist Helena Tejedor. «I’ll remember this moment for the rest of my life.»

Meanwhile, Jenner said in her Instagram post that Hadid’s fashion moment was «amazing to witness.» In fact, the Kylie Cosmetics founder helped Coperni become viral in April by carrying the brand’s Swipe purse, which is made of blown glass. Gigi Hadid unveiled that season’s «it» bag—which Doja Cat and Tinashe both adorned their 2022 Grammy outfits with—at Coperni’s autumn/winter 2022 show in March.

Some compared the unconventional design to Alexander McQueen’s spring 1999 presentation, in which model Shalom Harlow whirled on a wooden turntable while two robotic arms painted her multi-layered white gown with black and neon-yellow paint. «That’s something no one will forget,» Sarah Mower of Vogue, who was there at the McQueen presentation, said in 2018. «It’s a McQueen performance, a coup de théâtre that will go down in history as one of the top ten fashion show thrills of all time.» The rawness and impact of it never fades no matter how many times you watch it on tape. »

Hadid’s most recent sartorial spectacular was only a small portion of her packed Fashion Month schedule for Victoria Beckham, Isabel Marant, and Burberry in New York, London, Milan, and, ultimately, Paris. Her spray-painted Coperni dress, as it was for the guests, may be the model’s greatest stand-out moment this season — and one that will be impossible to top.
